Just off the Garden Route
Sea and Safari Peace and Solitude Just off the Garden Route Off the Beaten Track The Wild Coast

Much has been written about the Garden Route but still undiscovered gems remain for those who have the patience to look. Sadly, for me the Garden Route has traded the spirit and essence of Africa for the sophistication of the modern world, but with my choices some of it is regained.

Short distances away from the 'shiny cutlery and white tablecloths' are a couple of my favourites tucked away up short, gravel roads. There you can find the peace and quiet of coastal seclusion, gently mountain bike along fern-clad forest trails, enjoy a picnic alongside the warm Indian Ocean or spoil yourself with a horse ride along a deserted beach.

You can't leave South Africa without spending a night or two without feeling and touching nature at its best.

The Khoisan word Tsitsikamma, meaning place of abundant waters has a mystical ring to it with the road leading me through giant pines and delicate ferms completing that magic.  The culinary reputation of this Garden Route Lodge was an added pull.
