The Colonial on Arundel, Addo

The Colonial on Arundel, Addo

Here, the owners, Conor and Molly O’Hagan Ward, warm-hearted former hoteliers and game lodge partners have lovingly renovated an old colonial style farmhouse on a farm in the Sundays River Valley.   The accommodation, steeped in old world luxury offers two completely separate suites, each with a bedroom and separate lounge and its own small ‘plunge pool’ set in a tranquil established garden setting.  Molly with her renowned culinary and hostessing skills and Conor with his humour and extensive knowledge of the Park, the animals and the history of the area make a formidable partnership.

My early afternoon visit to the Park in Conor’s comfortable 4x4 vehicle started off with a history lesson about Sundays River citrus farming and the role Sir Percy Fitzpatrick (of Jock of the Bushveld fame) played in the area some 100 years ago.  Having always been enchanted by elephants I have visited Addo many times before but Conor made this visit a memorable added-value experience.   His anecdotes, fact sharing, astonishing eyesight and infectious enthusiasm made for an exciting afternoon with plentiful sightings of elephant, zebra, buffalo, antelope and the unique flightless dung beetle.  Being a birding enthusiast the mating ritual of the blue crane was particularly interesting as was a close up view of the Northern Black Korhaan – a first for me.  A sundowner drink at Jack’s Picnic Spot brought the game drive to a fitting end before heading back to their beautiful home for dinner, which is provided on special request.

Molly served a superb meal of ‘top restaurant’ standard to bring my day to a glorious close with Conor exchanging his game ranging hat for that of a well skilled sommelier.  Thanks for a great bottle of red wine!  After a wonderful night’s rest, breakfast with all the ‘bells and whistles’ met every expectation I had of this delightful establishment.  In the words of an independent review I have read subsequent to my stay – Great Location, Great Food, Great Hosts - I couldn’t say it better.

A thank you too to Zack their large black dog who guards and greets with equal enthusiasm and a welcome also to their two new ‘rescued additions’.   Donkeys Eyeore and Pindrop may well play a role some time in the future in the theatre of experiences that The Colonial rolls out every day.

A recent addition to this beautiful Guesthouse has been The Farmhouse Room within the farmhouse itself. Though not boasting a great outlook nor a private lounge, the citrus orchards can been seen from the bedroom. What the Farmhouse Room does have however is an adjacent single bedroom, all part of the deal and ideal for a third person in the group.  The main bedroom offers all the standard little luxuries one might expect and guests may make use of The Colonials's massive verandah overlooking their delightful landscaped garden. This accommodation, suitable for 3 is being sold at approximately 30% less than the other two suites and it also includes breakfast.
