Kichaka Private Game Lodge

Kichaka Private Game Lodge

Kichaka is a small luxury Lodge set in a beautiful bushveld valley on an established 20,000 acre Reserve about 100kms. from Port Elizabeth.  Wooden walkways lead you from your stylish and secluded suite to the comfort and glamour of the Main Lodge.   The Staff presence is unobtrusive, yet warm, welcoming and attentive.  The cuisine and the wines – some of South Africa’s best. The skilful and knowledgeable Rangers will ensure that your game drives and wildlife sightings are breathtaking and memorable.  An experience of a lifetime – that is a pledge.

The Eastern Cape is fast gaining a reputation for its plethora of high quality Big 5 private Game Reserves. Always keen to try something new, my choice of Kichaka (relatively new at the time) nestled in a bushveld valley on the Lalibela reserve was a bit of a 'shot in the dark'.  However, dark it definitely was on as I elaborate on my wonderful find.

Kichaka is a Swahili word meaning 'bush' and indeed as you venture towards the lodge, you have a sense of leaving the turbulence of the real world behind as you enter the peace and tranquillity of the wild.  The beautiful setting of the Main Lodge overlooking a small waterhole sets the tone for your escape.  Here you are welcomed and introduced to your surroundings.  The gracious lounge, a stately dining area and the resource-filled library above ooze charm and comfort.  The outdoor terrace and deck areas feature a small rim flow pool adjacent to the waterhole.  Here a giraffe or a hippo may just surprise you in your own quiet moment.  Your meals, enjoyed in the dining room, on the terrace or in the privacy of your own suite are an experience on their own - contemporary South African cuisine at its finest.  The wine list is award winning and will afford you the opportunity to savour the season's best.

Spread out along a series of wooden walkways which wind their way through the bush are ten secluded stone and thatch suites, luxurious in every detail.  Blending into the surroundings you are 'at one' with nature. Sliding doors open out onto a private deck each with its own heated plunge pool where you may relax and unwind within the privacy of the indigenous bush.  The delicate sounds of the wild caress your spirit. Experienced Rangers attuned to your specific interest will excite you with their knowledge and love of the wild. Game drives twice daily in this established Reserve bring you the sights and sounds of true Africa.  Kichaka's dedicated but unobtrusive hosts pander to your every need.  From a gorgeous array of coffee table books showcasing the beauty and wonders of the continent to the offer of an indulgent massage - you dictate the pace of your stay.   Maybe a night time 'cosmic safari' or simply a chance to just curl up in front of the open fire (yes, it gets cold in winter!) with a good book....Kichaka is indeed a wonderful find - a perfect sanctuary. I give it a golden hallmark - in a class of its own.

Situated as it is close to Grahamstown and within easy reach of the coast, a few days spent here will allow you to imbibe both the fascinating history of the Region as well as the magnificence of its golden coastline.
