The Fernery Lodge & Chalets, Tsitsikamma

The Fernery Lodge & Chalets, Tsitsikamma

In my mind, a slide show of elephants and woodcutters, giant trees and colourful birdlife, cascading waterfalls and wild seas plays out the history and beauty of the area.  It was this special something that I was in search of when I took time out to visit The Fernery Lodge, close to the base of the awe inspiring Tsitsikamma Mountains.

Approaching from Port Elizabeth, the Blueliliesbush turn-off shortly after the sign to Eerste Rivier, heralded my approach to the Fernery. I soon became enveloped by the refreshing scent of the pine trees lining the gravel road. Directional arrows led me easily to the impressive entrance where a successful fern export business runs side by side with the Lodge.

Reception dealt courteously and efficiently with the booking-in procedure and I soon found myself cocooned in a delightful wooden chalet, aptly named Galjoen, after the National fish of South Africa. Tucked away in my private little eerie, with a view of the ocean and the myriad birds in the surrounding vegetation I sat awhile and took in my surroundings.  Tastefully decorated and very well equipped the chalet offered comfort of a very high standard.

As evening crept across the sky, I strolled up the walkway, across the manicured lawns and under giant sprawling trees to the Main Lodge.  Originally a private home, perched on the edge of the gorge, looking straight out to sea, I was welcomed with a roaring fire (yes it can get chilly in these parts!) and a charming hostess, Geraldine.   Dinner would be served in half an hour.   A culinary feast it certainly was with my menu selection being a duo of button & black mushroom veloute soup, followed by ginger flavoured fishcakes with coconut prawn curry sauce as a main course.  A chilled strawberry soup brought this exceptional meal to an unusual and refreshing close.

Back in the chalet, sleep came easily and as dawn broke, the day presented plenty of new experiences.  After a hearty breakfast, I could a walk around the Fern Nursery and the export packing shed, or head out for a gentle hike along one of the many trails on the farm.  If I felt more energetic, I could go for a mountain bike ride through the forests beyond and share a picnic lunch under the shade of the spreading canopies.

If peace and tranquility is something you seek – you’d go a long way to find something as good as The Fernery – and here you have great cuisine and ample comfort thrown in too.   As an alternative to the chalets, there are 5 beautifully appointed suites in the main Lodge – so the choice of accommodation is yours.
