Mount Camdeboo Private Game Reserve

Mount Camdeboo Private Game Reserve

Nestled in the lee of the Sneuuberg Mountains not far from Graaff Reinet, is the Mount Camdeboo Private Game Reserve.  Set on 14000 hectares of ancient land you will be embraced by the luxury, grace and superior hospitality of days gone by.  You may spend your days following the wildlife that roams the hauntingly beautiful scenery, or quietly relaxing in the comfort of your Cape Dutch home. Whatever you choose, the silence and soul-stirring peace of the majestic Karoo will be your constant companion.

In search of space and wilderness, of emptiness and mystery, I set out to discover this far flung corner of the Eastern Cape. The vast plains of the Karoo used to be the setting for a great migration – millions of springbok trampled the landscape every year, breaking up the parched earth of the Karoo, allowing dormant grass seeds to germinate; the millions of dung pats then served as fertilizer and the grass came back year after year.   That was way back in the late 1890’s.  The great herds were hunted out and newly erected farm fences blocked their migratory routes.   Sheep farming became the mainstay of the area with obvious changes to the ecology of the area.   To-day however many of those farms are being bought up and consolidated into Reserves, where sound veld management systems are helping to restore the natural vegetation and where herds of animals once again roam free. Mount Camdeboo is just one of those Reserves.

The two beautifully restored Manor houses at Mount Camdeboo offer a total of 9 luxurious double en suite bedrooms.  Here you will enjoy the luxury and elegance of yesteryear but the needs of the ‘modern’ 21st century visitor will also be met.   A third option is the secluded Honeymoon Suite - a renovated old stone gatehouse steeped in privacy and romance.  A wealth of coffee table books offer you the chance to experience our beautiful land, whilst sipping a pre-luncheon cocktail on the covered verandah.    In the height of summer, you will be tempted to take a dip in the cool waters of the swimming pools, which are a feature of each of the houses.  Led by skilled and knowledgeable guides, game drives and walks will connect you to the wonderfully varied flora and fauna of this diverse landscape, with its four biomes and an altitude range of almost 5000 feet.    This is not a Big 5 Reserve but its wealth and variety will not disappoint. The views are dramatic, with characteristic ‘koppies’ silhouetted against mountain ranges beyond.  The purple of the mountains, the greens and ochres of the plains blend seamlessly with the blue of the sky.   My close range sighting of six magnificent giraffes nestling into the bush thickets on the edge of the grass plains will be one that remains with me for a long time.   The Mountain zebras kept their distance…. snorting and frolicking in the clear mountain air.  Birding enthusiasts will be thrilled by the variety on show.

A stay of this kind it is not only about style and elegance, wildlife and hauntingly beautiful vistas.  What about the hosts?   Well, seldom have I experienced such superb service… maintaining a quiet and unobtrusive presence at times, yet friendly and engaging at others.     I was ‘wowed’ by the delicate flavours of the cuisine, presented in a relaxed and informal manner.  My body was nurtured and my soul was pampered.

I read; I rested; I was enveloped by the tranquillity of the place.  The night sky of the Karoo prefaced my dreams of a world of beauty, friendship and peace.   If only the ‘real’ world was like this....
